Michael Caine and Laurence Olivier sit and have a good old English banter for a couple of hours, which may or may not involve blackmail and murder. The staging of the whole film often hints at the stage origins of the story, and there are no other actors show on screen. But the small scale of the drama is very effective throughout as various mind games are played. A lot of quips are made and a lot of booze is consumed as things get stranger and more tense as the mystery unravels, it's a very enjoyable mixture of creative detective ploys and sly subterfuge.
